I‘m Shirley, the creator and ceramicist behind all you see at Kuro Ceramics.
A graduate in Fine Art, and a successful artist as an abstract painter, I had always wanted to try my hand at ceramics, but it wasn’t until I dove deep into my ancestry, that I felt the nudge by them to go for it.
Honouring this ancient highly skilled craft, I choose to work slowly, meticulously, with the intention that each piece delights and invites a conversation on multiple layers.
Kuro is the Proto-Celtic (the mother tongue of my ancestors) word for circle, symbolizing the circle of a drum, the circle of prayer and the circle of council.
To me, Kuro symbolizes the heart beat of my ancestors beating within me, the circle made by the potter’s wheel and an invitation to communion and ceremony in our everyday
